Black Geyser: Couriers of Darkness

Very boring game, it's not as bad as Solasta which was downright horrible. However it suffers from many issues that make the game a slog to finish and detract from the experience. (Last point has some spoilers but not very big ones). -Janky and buggy controls like characters not holding position when you set them to that stance. -Poor performance which is odd considering the game is not anything special graphically. -The end-game is just a slog of poorly balanced damage sponge enemies and aoe casters. Fighting constantly to the point it's a snoozefest. -The inventory weight system and containers are poorly implemented and you're going to constantly get over-encumbered. Adding to the tedium -Quest items don't spawn when you initially go to an area making even more mandatory backtracking and adding to the boredom. -Deeply unsatisfying story and ending, the usual "a mortal cannot kill a god!" nonsense. As well as them making copies of your characters which is very lazy. Honestly I almost gave up but managed to finish the game, I would not say anything in this holds a candle to Baldur's Gate or even Pillars of Eternity. This is a very competent CRPG, with an interesting enough premise to consider a second playthrough to antagonise the greed meter. The combat is basic but sufficient for the game. The recruitable party members are ok to average. I actually really appreciated the warp to quest-giver NPC button in the quest journal. The single biggest criticism is the writing, which at times is abysmal (refer: interactions with Isla). The game would have been far stronger if the writer had just toned down the dialogue choices to have only one edgy comment (as opposed to 3 out of 4), or one compliment (as opposed to all). It did at times put me off continuing.

Interesting story, but lots of unnecessary “filler” mechanics. These mechanics contribute nothing to game play and only exist to prolong the time spent in game. Poor spell selection with lots of useless spells. You'll basically use summoning and healing spells. No real tactics needed in fighting monsters. Spam summoning spells, send in tanks, back rank pelts enemies with missile weapons. Played as long as I could stand it, end game is just a slog with the save option disabled. Dialogue choices are basically: overly good, overly bad; and blandly neutral; no nuance whatsoever. An unfulfilling and bland game.

Have you ever woken up and thought "Maybe *not* Murder Hobo?" This is a CRPG by people who clearly love the genre and wanted to make their own. I've played a lot of the CRPGs out there: BGs, PST (both), NWNs, Arcanum, Fallouts, Tyranny, DOSs, PoEs, etc. so I wanted to see what Black Geyser had. I've completed the game with full achievements and I'm going to cover the pros, the cons, and the ones where the pros and cons are directly interlocked. Pro: Not D&D. I still play D&D. But there are infinite ways to not be D&D. From combat to skills this is its own thing (also see the first Pro/Con). Pro: The morality system is unique. As per my opening line, I really think the developers wondered whether they could make a game with a CRPG Player Morality. Murder Hobo or Not Murder Hobo is the fundamental morality engine of this game (expressed as greed). It does have effects upon the game, though I mostly saw the results towards endgame. Pro: It has all the standards: companions with sidequests, banter, romances, and different goals, strongholds, different environments, weapons, armors, skills, spells, and some branching endgame. Classic baldurs gate 1 or 2 style rpg but made with a modern engine and polish. If you like traditional rpgs, this is gold.
