Aliens: Dark Descent

Excellent "real" time squad game! Excellent mechanics, that are simplistic, but limiting, ratcheting up the pressure

One of the best Alien games made. The only downside is that we never got an expansion and will never get a sequel.

I really wanted to like this game but it's the most frustrating and aggravating game I have played. It is riddled with software bugs and glitches. When the game does work, it's still most frustrating and aggravating game to play because you're dealing with stress and resource management. All your marines have some negative trait that makes everything worse then you get stress trauma debuffs which makes it even more worse, even though there is a way to deal with stress it requires 1 tool, basically one room to turn into a shelter by welding a door shut. But doesn't require any tools to break a weld. That doesn't make any sense. I don't think welding should take a tool if breaking a weld doesn't require one. Sentries that get damage require a tool to repair, hacking a door requires a tool, a marine's drone that gets downed requires a tool to repair. The game has this overuse need for tools, and it's excessive and detracts from the game's progression. Marines get stressed out too easily, and if you let it go on too long it starts eating ammo and makes marines perform poorly. Just second best Alien game right after Isolation.

I am a huge fan of the Aliens franchise. There are few fantasy universes that I feel more drawn to. I am also a huge fan of Real Time Tactics games such as the Commandos franchise, Shadow Tactics, etc. This game is the beautiful intersection of those two things and it is wonderful. Pros: The sound is exquisite. The graphics look just like you'd want a god POV in the Aliens universe to look. The gameplay is fun. They say it's an extremely difficult game, and although it's definitely got some difficulty to it but I wouldn't put it out there as the dark souls of RTT games. I love that you can upgrade your soldiers. The idea of deploying and swapping out soldiers feels unique and novel. I love that you have more than just "easy medium hard" for difficulty settings. Cons: I have had 2 glitches forcing me to load a previous save, one glitch ruined an hour of my gameplay. I think a little more love should have been given to the models, some of the soldiers look super... not human? I dunno. Mainly just the females.
