A good game if you hunger for modern Castlevania-style fun. Just be aware that it is absolutely loaded with LGBT relationships and doesn't suggest so anywhere on the surface, once you get deep into quests or message logs you get dunked in the implications seemingly as a reward. It's no wonder none of the past people's relatives exist in the present day. As I summed up for one of my relatives: there's plenty to explore and lots to collect and beat up, but it's most tolerable if you skip all the optional dialogue you possibly can.

Just a few hours ago, I was telling a friend that I’ve been looking for a while now—without any luck—for a game that includes some role-playing elements without getting too deep or complex. One where you fight in real time, but the battles don’t happen at breakneck speed. Ideally, one that tells a story without forcing you to click through pages and pages of dialogue most of the time. So, something more laid-back, challenging here and there, but not at the difficulty level of Silksong or anything like that. I just checked my Steam library to see if there was anything hiding in there that, for whatever reason, I’d never played before. Luckily, I (re)discovered Timespinner, which was already installed but I’d never actually launched. The art style immediately reminded me of a time many years ago. I instantly thought of a very specific game… the unforgettable *Secret of Evermore* on the SNES. And right from the start, I noticed: The controls are precise and ensure that both the combat and the platforming sections are equally fun. The graphics are, of course, a bit more modern, but still wonderfully retro. After a little under an hour of playtime, I have a growing feeling that Timers…

Timespinner is a pretty good Igavania about a Young Adult Fantasy Book Heroine experiencing a character arc in a time adventure. Mechanically this is a pretty good imitation of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night and its derivatives, but with extra time travel flavor. The controls feel great, it has a good selection of abilities and environments, the map is fun to uncover, and the pixel art, creature designs and music are excellent. I wish the game offered more resistance in terms of difficulty, exploration and character stat accumulation make it too easy to trivialize the combat. Then there's 2010s-era microagression-aware diverse writing. I'm not a fan, because it comes across as boring and predictable. It's good enough to never be cringy, so overall it ends up at forgettable. Taken together, Timespinner is a good metroidvania that apes the style of the classics with a forgettable story and a focus on a more chill experience. I 100%-ed it in about 12 hours and I think it's worth playing if you want to unwind or if you're looking for a nostalgia hit.

Despite its age and its popularity amongst Metroidvania fans, I feel like this still may qualify as a hidden gem. I’ve bought and played through Timespinner on three different platforms over the years and still can’t wait for the sequel. The beautiful pixel art harkens back to the SNES days and is much more appealing to me than the 2.5D style of something like Bloodstained. You can finish the game somewhere between 3-5 hours but I personally enjoy the shorter length. This is still a top 5 in the genre for me.
