Tales of Symphonia

Got me Hooked on these DAM "Tales of" games. Gamecube Never Dies. Play it, its awesome.

Good game. Not a good port. Good thing I didn't even pay for it. Play the GameCube version.

Symphonia was really my first introduction to early-JRPGs. I had played Final Fantasy XV, various Pokemon games, and dabbled here and there, but this was truly my first long-form JRPG that could be considered a "classic" of the genre that I fully completed. And honestly, I really liked it. Symphonia seems at first to be really surface-level - It has a conventional "princess-chosen-one-save-the-world" story, but the more you play the more you realise that it actually deals with some pretty heavy themes. Such as paternal abuse, war, slavery, family bonds etc. And that was honestly a nice surprise. However, go in expecting a really campy but endearing band of people, who say cheesy JRPG anime-esque lines, and exaggerate almost everything. That's what's lovable about it. For a Gamecube game, it plays surprisingly well, looks pretty decent and isn't too buggy. The controls (especially in the Rheiards portions and on the main map) can be annoying, but you'll get passed it pretty quickly if you power through. My main issue with this game is quest markers - They just dont exist at all. You will be left guessing pretty much the entire game on what to do and where to go next and the synop…

Tales of symphonia was a pretty enjoyable game. Definitely worth the £6 I paid for it. It's older and clunky (it's like 22 years old), but it's very fun. The story is definitely where the game shines the most. Sylvarant and Tethella , the two worlds where humans and elves are persecuted, respectively. The way the characters interact with the two worlds is so interesting. It does go on for a bit too long later on in the game tho. Combat was ok, I usually just spammed attacks and abilities and blocked occasionally. Aged fairly well for an old game. The voice acting was also really good, there were so many great voice actors in this game, such as katsuyuki Konishi (Lloyd), Akio Otsuka (Regal) and Hideyuki Tanaka (mithos). There was little grinding needed, so the game was fairly easy. The character interactions were also very enjoyable, I especially liked the dynamic between regal and presea. A sister who is pained by the death of her sister and the man who killed said sister. I do wish the town's were a little larger and there were more side quests to be honest, but even without this, it was quite enjoyable.
