Chronicle of Innsmouth: Mountains of Madness

Technically speaking, a significant improvement over the previous title: polished visuals, exciting new locations, more characters, interesting puzzles, deeper diving into the Lovecraftian mythos. Definitely a decent and enjoyable adventure game, with some lovely story moments and memorable art. However, the game falls a bit short when it comes to exposition and pacing. Slow dialogs here and there, unnecessary character interactions often burdened by inconsistent voice acting. The story tries to fit everything Lovecraftian into a common narrative and sometimes lacks in substance. Overall, happily recommended for Lovecraft fans out there and definitely for hardcore point-and-click enthusiasts.

Chronicle of Innsmouth: Mountains of Madness is a deliberately traditional point-and-click adventure that embraces the unsettling fiction of H.P. Lovecraft while presenting it through the visual and mechanical language of early 1990s graphic adventures. Developed by PsychoDev and published by AtomicHorde, it is a prequel to Chronicle of Innsmouth, taking place ten years before the first chapter. Rather than simply revisiting familiar territory, the game broadens the series with a more ambitious mystery spanning Innsmouth, Arkham, the Antarctic, and different periods of history. The story begins with private investigator Lone Carter awakening on a beach near Innsmouth after a horrific encounter with a Shoggoth. His body had apparently suffered fatal damage, yet Carter inexplicably returns to life completely healed. Survival proves to be more of a curse than a blessing, as disturbing visions and revelations begin invading his mind. His attempt to escape Innsmouth and return to Arkham gradually becomes an investigation into ritual murders and a conspiracy whose origins extend far beyond the immediate mystery. Great prequel to Chronicles Of Innsmouth, this game has vastly improved graphics, and changes to the left/right click interface. It follows Lone Carter's story following on from the flashback in the previous game. The first half takes place in Arkham, where you can explore the city and investigate. The second half is similar to Fate Of Atlantis, exploring an ancient city. There are no reaction puzzles in this entry, which were a problem in the previous game. If you like Gabriel Knight, Hobb's Barrow, etc, get the double pack of the two games!

Great atmosphere, great music, character voices and graphics. Congratulations!

I really liked the atmosphere. Some of the voice-over seems off, but the story, the graphics. All in all a nice experience :)

Very good adaptation of the Cthulhu Mythos. Engaging story and plot. Realistic puzzles, that made sense. Only negative that others also mentioned: The voice acting was sloppy many times and the story suffered from it. I would invest in hiring a voice-over director to guide the actors. Overall, I feel like there was a lot of effort and love invested on the game by the creators and I really appreciate this. I've also played the first game and this was even better. I hope there is a third one. I will definitely support it.
