About Cossacks: Back to War

✦ AI summary

Command 20 European nations across 100 historical missions spanning the 16th-18th centuries in this complete standalone real-time strategy game featuring massive battles with up to 8,000 units. With two new nations, eight fresh units, randomly generated maps, and low system requirements, it's the ultimate Cossacks experience playable on any PC without requiring other games in the series.

To stand alone in war is extremely unpleasant. Extremely pleasant, on the other hand, is the stand-alone version Cossacks: Back to War. Containing all of the gameplay features of Cossacks: European Wars and Cossacks: The Art of War, this is a complete care package for all current and future Cossacks fans. This add-on contains 100 captivating missions taking place between the 16th and 18th centuries. In addition, two new nations, Switzerland and Hungary, are included. These countries waged war in the late Middle Ages and essentially influenced the development of European military strategies. This addition causes the second add-on of Cossacks to pass the threshold of allowed gaming fun.

Cossacks: Back to War is a classic real-time strategy game developed by GSC Game World. Released in 2002, it is an expanded standalone version of Cossacks: European Wars and is known for its large-scale battles, historical setting, and deep economic systems. The game is set in the 17th and 18th centuries and allows players to control different European nations. Each faction has unique units, buildings, and technological advantages, which adds variety and replayability. The main goal is to build a strong economy, develop your army, and defeat opponents in massive battles. One of the most impressive features of the game is the scale of combat. Unlike many RTS games of its time, Cossacks allows thousands of units to fight at once on the battlefield. This creates epic and chaotic battles that feel truly massive in scale. Resource management plays a very important role. Players must carefully balance food, wood, stone, and gold production to support both their economy and military. Poor planning can quickly lead to defeat, especially in longer matches. The game also features a strong historical focus. Units, buildings, and nations are based on real historical periods, which adds edu…

To play the game on modern PCs, you need to copy a file to the game directory. You can find that file in the community tab. I played this game when I was a kid and at that time, the campaign seemed impossible to play. Not being able to understand English, I assumed it was my issue. But playing the game right now, I can tell you it wasn't. The campaign is extremely difficult and you can proceed only if you play the game with the IQ of 180 and play as the developers intended. Otherwise, you will definitely loose all your units. Overall, not a bad purchase and can be quite nostalgic, although I would not considering it a must buy.

It's a timeless strategy game if you ask me. There are some minor issues, the ai is a bit dated and for random map mode it's best to use more flat terrain options, limited resolution options, no windowed option, requires activating compatibility mode for it to properly function. But there are far more upsides, a distinct historical setting not often used, many many nations to play as with different buildings and units, many upgrades, a multitude of decisions to do with resources, a well balanced mix of simple city building and army building and combat, wheat, many single missions, a mission editor. There are no campaigns that come with the game by default but you can download on the internet. If you can get past the datedness of the game and somewhat janky ai this game is great.
