This game feels like something Lovecraft would develop if he was a weeb and under the influence of psychedelics. Altogether this was a solid and highly unique experience, although partially tainted by some shortcomings. The general presentation is great. The vibrant art direction with artstyle diversity is praiseworthy and manages to capture the descriptions very well. The music and sound-effects, while not featuring a large variety throughout the game, still success at establishing an immersive and trippy atmosphere. To me, the rather problematic aspect was the story-gameplay distribution and depth; it appears that the studio tried focusing on both story and gameplay instead of prioritizing one of them, yet didn't have sufficient funds to ensure stable quality for everything. The story is genuinely very captivating, plus linked with that unhinged ambience, kept me highly invested. My issue with it was mostly the fact that the storytelling tends to rely on info-dumps rather than slower build-up. Some scenes (including the endings) simply had potential to be made more fleshed out. The narrative itself however was interesting and wonderfully portrayed the madness of the setting. The story of this game was ok (I think lacking enough setup to become attached to any characters), but the dice mechanic is quite miserable since failing a check doesn't really lead to a more interesting outcome, it just penalizes your sanity or health. The system is horrible. No read/unread skip, no auto mode or text speed, no window controls, poor volume controls, no keybinds, restrictions on even accessing the main menu, inability to go to title screen except between chapters...I don't know why it's lacking so many basic features that every other VN typically has. Added to that is the poor placement of save points, forcing you to repeat these rng battles to see different endings, and the NG+ obvs making you play through several chapters again before the bonuses really help... It's annoying to play. The art is pretty but isn't worth the hassle. I'd only buy this on a steep discount.7 found this helpful
really fun ! i like the story so much ! ! i love my new friends ! very cute and love their personalities. i think the protag's personality and story is fun ~ i like this game even more with a guide LOL ! i wish the (best) ending was longer ! the reveal of the images were fun !!!! this art is so pretty yall! i played with a friend and we were very engaged !! we replayed everything just to see the little dialogues !! this was my first time with genuine cthulhu myths !! so interesting ~ i got while on sale (5$) but i like it so much that i believe it's worth full price tbh ! looking forward to playing the sequel if the ai graphics are replaced ?? is real sads, man ! love the work, creator !! <32 found this helpful
I wish I could push past the flaws and actually play the story, but at is stands, I found myself frustrated within the first 15 minutes. There is no full screen option; there are no settings you can change. Each line of text appears at a very slow pace (I could feel my fingers getting tired from clicking the left mouse button trying to make it go faster). And pretty much 10m in, it starts railroading you into having to do very specific things to advance the story. I want to say that if you can look past it being Itch.io quality hobby VN project, it's worth getting on sale. Or otherwise the dev. can fix some of these things and it'd be worth trying again, even for me.2 found this helpful
Storytelling is all over the place, feels like devs crammed everything Cthulhu into this and that makes it feel a bit overloaded. Sometimes less is more. The dice rolls are a nice touch. Art direction is very unique, not exactly my cup of tea but interesting enough, i could go with less pastel tho. Can't really recommend this game in it's entirety but it's too good to not recommend it either. I don't really know what to do here so i'll give it a thumbs up. :32 found this helpful
Lunatic Whispers fills a niche I don’t see very often, which is why I keep coming back to it. Despite only spanning seven in-game days, the pacing is excellent and reflects how someone might realistically think and act under pressure. The liminal backgrounds, ominous-but-catchy music, and fun roll-dice mechanic create a strong atmosphere. Small choices and approaches can completely change the vibe of a run, which makes replaying genuinely rewarding. Figuring everything out isn’t difficult, but it does reward patience and curiosity. The presentation can feel rough in places, but that honestly adds to the charm. A memorable psychological horror that sticks with you, and the sequel though more streamlined, is just as unhinged.
