"Epic Quest of the 4 Crystals" is one of hundreds of low effort retro-pixel RPG Maker asset/construction kit flips spamming the Steam catalog, made with the RPG Maker video game construction kit... in their own words, "Our easy to use tools are simple enough for a child." Like all RPG Maker "games", this is essentially a bunch of low quality/canned assets from RPG Maker coupled with a cringeworthy high school anime club fan fiction. This time Andorlea/Warfare/SimProse/whatever other shell account they use to try hide their identity have managed to push yet another extremely poorly written Final Fantasy RPG Maker asset flip. The plot is painfully generic, the writing awful, but it is accompanied by some completely godawful "baby's first Wacom tablet" artwork that would have had whoever came up with it banned from DeviantArt for life... it's just that bad. In a surprise to nobody, the encounter and level design is amateurish and crap, and now the engine... As with all RPG Maker games, the poor quality engine displays badly in fullscreen and doesn't have full HD support or any graphics tweaking options, making this unacceptable for any dedicated modern …

After much thought, I decided to give this a positive review. It's a cheap game where the core gameplay is, if not especially original, generally well executed. The art is fine, the music good, and the writing... well, we'll come back to that. If you enjoy turn-based RPG combat, you may find enough to enjoy here. This follows a standard formula for this type of game. You wander around an overworld, then transition to a battle screen for combat. One nice thing is there are no random encounters; enemy presence is clear on the overworld, even if the nature of the enemies is concealed. You can clear out all enemies, and reset them as you wish with a purchasable item. This ensures you only enter battle when ready, you can clear out an area for easy exploration, but you also have options to grind if necessary. Combat itself is fine. Again, nothing too original, but your characters have a good spread of abilities. Some use mana, others charge up with attacks, and in the second half of the game you get QTE-based bonuses as well.
