I wish I could give this a mixed rating. If you haven't played the first game, then I think this is worth picking up on sale, but if you have played the first there isn't much new to experience here. Not enough to warrant double the price anyway. I feel like it doesn't do enough to improve on the formula of the original. If anything, the heroes undermine the army building. You can invest all your upgrades into building a single unkillable dragon-slaying tank of a unit and that's all it takes to win even on the hardest "Hell" difficulty.

Don't bother if you played the first, really no improvements on the formula

This is review coming from an avid enjoyer of the first Mage & Monsters game. Mage & Monsters 2 really added a lot more depth and quality of life to the auto battler system that already made the first game very enjoyable. • Heroes. Not only is there a much bigger roster of heroes, most of them actually fight in the battlefield now and have their own abilities/health rather than simply being more of a "perk" like the first game. They are practically your very own "boss" on your side and you can upgrade them indefinetely and make them really OP if you wish. That brings me to my next point. • Upgrades. The upgrade system is MUCH better compared to the first game. Not only can you upgrade army stats like the first game, you can now upgrade your Hero as stated before, as well as your spells INDEFINITELY. The first game had limitations on spell upgrades and the army upgrades went up in price dramatically, but now those army stat upgrades can be purchased as many times as you want at the regular price. This new upgrade system allows you freedom to many different playstyles. You can spend all your upgrades on making a really OP Hero, an insanely strong army, or incredibily OP spells…
