About Miasma 2: Freedom Uprising
✦ AI summary
Command an elite squad of freedom fighters in this turn-based tactics game where you plan all your team's moves simultaneously before committing to see how the chaotic battle unfolds. This rebuilt classic from the Xbox Live Indie era features a unique real-time execution system, survival mode with online leaderboards, and New Game+ progression across a campaign set against an original soundtrack.
Miasma 2, the sequel to the Xbox Live Indie strategy game, was released in 2012 in the "Indie Games" category and on PC. It's now been rebuilt for modern processors and made available on Steam with support for Cloud Saves, Achievements and Steam Leaderboards. It is presented here, like the original, as a glimpse into XBLIG development at the time.
Original (2012) description:
ESP Games present Miasma 2, the sequel to 2010's turn-based strategy hit.
Take control of Paul or Lina once more, and command your elite squad of freedom fighters in battle against the oppressive Vilhelm Industries. With an all-new turn-based tactics/real-time battle system, the action runs fast and thick, and with new units to command - and a whole new graphics engine - this is one adventure not to be missed.
Miasma 2 gives turn-based strategy an unexpected twist as you must plan your entire team's orders at the start of the turn, then hit commit and see how it plays out. Will your courageous flanking manoeuvre pay off or will you be caught out of cover?
Included is a single-player campaign, continuing from one year after the events of Miasma 1, a survival mode, where you can pit your skills against waves of increasingly more difficult enemies, and post your scores online against the best Miasma players worldwide, and a New Game+ mode, where you can keep amassing those upgrades to create the most powerful team imaginable. All this is set against an entirely original score by composer Julian Cole.

You know, indy sequels generally come with expectations of being just like the first game with maybe minor improvements at best. Miasma 2 added major changes to the formula and I ended up really enjoying the experience. Like the first game, Miasma 2 is a tile-based tactical in the vein of X-Com with light RPG elements such as buying stat upgrades or consumable gear between missions. But this game introduced improved stealth, a first person base scene, and simultaneous actions. Now, you declare every characters actions and watch them play out in real time hoping to shoot first. This adds a new dynamic to the combat that I really like. The game is extremely short, the economy is completely borked and the RPG stats still feel very light and unbalanced. But ultimately, it doesn't detract from the experience. You level quickly enough that you can become OP early on and the inability to afford consumables isn't gamebreaking. I'd say it adds to the "Small-Indy-Charm" even if its not right. The most important difference for me between the 2 games was the stability. My review of the first game was after 42 minutes with 3+ crashes and struggles to even play. Post-review I DID finish t…6 found this helpful
