One Thousand Lies is a visual novel that transitions from comedy to psychological mystery, with players praising its engaging narrative about truth and deception, compelling character writing, and the emotional payoff of the protagonist learning to distinguish reality from his coping mechanisms. However, many criticize the game for excessive filler content, tedious side stories with repetitive humor, an insufferable protagonist, and a rushed ending that undermines the buildup. As a free-to-play title, players generally recommend giving it a try since there's no financial risk involved.
End was a bit rushed, however this is my favorite visual novel and I love the shift from comedy to psychological factors including how he couldn't distinguish what was real and fake due to his coping mechanism, but the one girl that he ends up with was always real and honest the whole time, letting him be truthful with himself for the first time in a long time.
One reviewer said it best so I'm just going to borrow their words: The story was far longer than it needed to be, due to heaps of filler content. For the most part, said content can be sorted into two categories: side stories that are meant to be funny but almost always end up being too tedious and dramatic; and condescending philosophical rants about how humans lie. I'll add that it could be fun if 1) the characters and scenes weren't all written with the exact same humor and unseriousness, 2) the MC wasn't an insufferable jackass who takes nothing seriously unless it concerns him, and 3) there wasn't this exchange: "I'm attracted to [a teenager in] the body of a little girl. Does that make me a monster? - Let's test it out. Imagine your ideal woman was blind. Would you still love her? - Yes. - What if half of her body was burnt? I'm sure you couldn't love her then!" First of all, the MC is cruel for no reason once again. Second of all, why is there pedophilia in my quirky visual novel? Don't lampshade the loli if you can only make it worse. (also, the "would you date X" joke goes on for the rest of the game, but they literaly forget why it started. I can't be the…
One Thousand Lies is a visual novel that starts off looking like a fairly normal romantic comedy before gradually becoming something much more psychological. I follow Ciarán, a university student whose ordinary life gets thrown into confusion after he starts receiving strange emails from someone he does not know. From there the story becomes more about figuring out what is actually happening, who is telling the truth and how much I can trust what I am being shown. I like that the game does not immediately explain everything because the mystery is a big part of what kept me interested. The writing is definitely the strongest part for me. The story mixes romance, comedy and psychological themes, so the tone can change quite a lot depending on what is happening. There are plenty of conversations and character interactions, but underneath the lighter moments there is always this feeling that something is not quite right. I like when a visual novel can make ordinary conversations feel important because I start paying more attention to small details and wondering whether something I have just read will matter later. I also like how the game handles its mystery. The strange messages giv…
Go try it for yourself, you have nothing to lose :D
One Thousand Lies is a free-to-play visual novel developed and published by Keinart Lobre that blends romance, comedy, mystery, and psychological storytelling into a surprisingly compelling narrative experience. What initially appears to be a lighthearted tale about everyday life and personal relationships gradually transforms into a deeper exploration of truth, deception, emotional struggles, and self-discovery. Through strong character writing and a steadily unfolding mystery, the game manages to deliver a story that remains engaging long after its opening chapters. The narrative follows Ciarán, a young man whose relatively ordinary life takes an unexpected turn when he begins receiving strange emails from an anonymous sender. These mysterious messages quickly become the catalyst for a series of events that challenge his understanding of the people around him and even his perception of himself. The game uses this premise to create an ongoing sense of intrigue, encouraging players to investigate the origins of the messages while becoming increasingly invested in the lives of the characters involved. One of the game's greatest strengths is its cast. The characters are more than s…
