Tokyo Xanadu eX+ successfully blends Persona-style high school life with solid action RPG combat featuring elemental mechanics and Falcom's signature quality soundtrack, with players particularly praising the character relationships and story progression that feels more grounded than similar titles. However, the game suffers from limited combat options like lacking a parry mechanic, repetitive motivational storytelling that may fatigue series veterans, and somewhat tropey character designs, though its self-contained story and decent charm make it worthwhile for action RPG fans seeking a shorte
I wanted to like this game a lot more than I did (thus far) I was recommended this and on paper, it sounded like a recipe for something I would love; Falcoms games with a persona twist (ignore the fact that's basically CS1). However, I'm putting it down like a dog FOR NOW after reaching nearly the end of chapter 3 due to a culmination of stuff. I don't really think the games premise was all that bad so far. Morimiya is a charming setting, and Falcoms signature with memorable NPCs their own storylines and notes and I think this was actually done really well so far. The OST I have heard so far is actually pretty decent too, and I thought the alternate dimension dungeon crawling and the plot threads created thus far were actually pretty interesting with the various factions and I thought the switching POV with the white masked guy was a very cool storytelling feature. It all felt like bits building to a worthwhile overarching narrative. However, almost 5 hours in, I couldn't be invested enough to push through the games shortcomings. My biggest issue was probably the cast so far, I don't necessarily dislike them but they're pretty uninspiring, they didn't really feel like people a…2 found this helpful
Before anything else, if you're not a fan of Nihon Falcom's games, it's hard to recommend Tokyo Xanadu. It's hard to recommend this over any other Falcom game (such as Ys VIII, another action JRPG, or Trails of Cold Steel I, which was the direct inspiration for this game) or even any other game with a similar setting (such as Atlus' Persona). If I had to use a word to describe Tokyo Xanadu it would be mediocre. Even as a Falcom fan, it's hard to vouch for the quality of this game. Doubly so when compared to Ys VIII, another Falcom game that released around the same time, for the same console (PS Vita). It's honestly puzzling how worse this game is. I wouldn't contest anyone that considers this Falcom's worst game. However, I can't, in any way, say that I dislike Tokyo Xanadu. Honestly, I quite like it. The setting is not particularly original: high-school students in a modern setting that have a unique power that enables them to save the world. The characters themselves also follow typical anime tropes. Still, in typical Falcom fashion, I found the cast pretty likable with good interactions and chemistry amongst them, even if many interactions follow what you'd expect to…1 found this helpful
This game might not be as stylish as say Persona 5 but the relationships are much more realistic and the story progression makes much more sense. All the love is in the details and it has its own unique charm1 found this helpful
Shiori <3
i just gave up during the intermission side story dungeon
Good game but it could have been better. My biggest complain is that it feels "stiff" in battle. I think they used same engine as Cold Steel games with were turn based with some minimal overworld fighting so it was not as noticible there. Its still a good game and if you like Falcom you will most likely like this one too but if this is your first game from the studio Trails of series and Ys game could be better starting point. This game is middle ground between those two Trails of series is all about world and characters and Ys is all about action gameplay so trying to combine them here was nice idea and end product is good but it doesn't exceed what other Falcom games can do when they focus more.
