The Surge 2

In the beginning, its tough to get the parry timing down!!!! But once you do......it's very rewarding, but still keeps you on your toes! A MUST PLAY!!!!

Aside from a couple of janky bosses, the second stage of the game that kicks you in the teeth for the first few hours and a few moments where it's easy to loose track of the correct path, the surge 2 is a massive improvement on the first. they fixed almost everything that made the first game frustrating and polished on a lot of mechanics. It's not quite as easy to cheese as the first, especially if you had the frontier riders DLC, but it's fine imo, it's much more forgiving. As for the ambience it is more casual and less enigmatic than the first, which to me is a bit of a downside, but overall pleasant. Just feel like the first game had a bit more going on regarding its story and overall feeling.

Just like the first surge, the story is interesting and the overall gameplay is fun. But: -The addition of directive parrying (1st game parrying was simply pressing block at the right time) is a bit of a let down. The system isn't that bad and its easy to master, but I still refused to use it until second half of the game. It made some bosses too easy, simply standing and parrying. That being said I strongly recommend taking the augment OFF as its more fun to learn to read the attacks than simply looking at a prompt on the screen -The gear , most armour set bonuses feel useless and I always used 3-3 parts to get a double bonus, but being able to use any weapon type without relying on efficiency like 1 is a good change, the level up system didn't need to be changed but it came out good, and being able to refill your heals, alltho making the game easier, makes it less sluggish and annoying. Highly recommended for any souls fan, and its pretty cheap on sale.

Honestly I love this game. Been a fan since the first release of The Surge. I hope they come out with a 3rd installment. It is a great "hack n slasher" grinder game!!!

I mostly had fun playing The Surge 2, but honestly wouldn't recommend it to anyone. If the first game was an imperfect gem, the sequel is a polished turd. Minor spoilers ahead. The visceral limb chopping combat is still fun, but that's pretty much where the positives end. The first(?) boss i had some issues with, then i realised it was going to be a parry rather than dodge based game, and things clicked. That was the last interesting boss of the game, the rest are basically nearly all just repeats with slight variations. The bosses in the first game weren't amazing, but you would think they would get better not worse in the sequel. Map design is... okay. It can be a struggle to balance the appeal of shortcuts in this style of game, with actually making those shortcuts useful or interesting. I remember the first game doing this better. Instead of the oppressive horror-esque atmosphere of the first game, they decided to take a leaf out of the Borderlands playbook, and make it all quirky humour and ridiculous stereotypes.
