Cathedral 3-D is a free arena shooter with a unique box-carrying mechanic that forces players to choose between attacking and collecting items, backed by a distinctive retro-pixelated visual style that some find appealing while others consider dated. Players appreciate the novelty concept and atmospheric visuals, but criticize the game for being repetitive with limited content, feeling more like an incomplete tech demo than a fully realized experience, and many consider it poorly thought-out despite its free price tag.
Feels more like a tech demo of sort. Gameplay is your typical arena shooter where you fend off incoming waves of humans in this case. Visuals are the biggest pro here, pixelated textures and low poly 3D mixed with high screen resolution (just like in emulators). Graphics is the most interesting part of the game. Repetitive after a while as there's only one level but interesting enough to check it out.
15 found this helpful
Cathedral 3-D is absolutely game for fans of arena shooters and retro-style action games. If you enjoy fast-paced shooting, give it a try—and it’s completely free!
Setting
In a YouTube developer interview, the creators mentioned their inspiration came from id Software’s Catacomb 3D, though I personally see little resemblance beyond one detail: the tutorial mentions the player’s heart is stored in a box. Yes, the player carries a box—with a key twist: holding the box prevents attacking but allows item pickup, and ammo regenerates slowly. Dropping the box lets you attack but blocks item collection. This mechanic persists throughout the game.
Art Style
Visually, the game leans into dark tones. The purple backgrounds and cool-colored architecture create an atmosphere of mystery, tension, and subtle horror, reminiscent of early cult-classic games. Players battle enemies in fantastical, eerie church-like environments. The pixelated graphics—with visible pixel grain on hands, buildings, and objects—evoke the look of early first-person shooters, placing it firmly in the “retro arena shooter” genre. "Cathedral 3-D" is a weird conceptual boomer shooter, basically a Quake ripoff with a gimmick, you carry a box around and you have to defend the box as part of the core game loop. That's it really. Visually, this has some fairly mediocre/dated looking graphics that will understandably be a turn off for a lot of gamers, and it's a big contributor to the failure of the game to attract gamers despite having no up-front cost. It's free... now, but it wasn't before. The developer was charging $5 USD for this. Price barriers, especially on low quality products, can be a direct cause of failure. It's a nice gesture for the game to be given away for free, but it also tells us that the game wasn't good enough to succeed as a paid product. Even though this is "free", it failed to appeal to the 120 million+ gamers on Steam. SteamDB showed the game peaked at only 13 concurrent players... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. Bearing in mind that free games don't add +1 to your game collector count, should you bother adding this to your library and downloading it? This is a "maybe" experience... if you have a lot of free time on your hand…1 found this helpful
It isn't thought-out well.

Игра Cathedral 3-D — отличный ремастер классической головоломки. Готическая графика, уютная атмосфера и увлекательные задачи, требующие логики и пространственного мышления. Идеально для любителей неспешного и вдумчивого геймплея.
