Rare case of remake done perfectly right.1 found this helpful
The original game was quite important in my formative years. My shared love of the game unlocked a whole new friend group with an interest in non-mainstream, artsier stuff. I bought no fewer than three black leather overcoats—mostly from thrift shops—directly as a result of Gabriel Knight. And I'd have ranked it top slot for decades, up until I hit Disco Elysium. That said, my opinions on the remake are unbiased and correct. Somehow, this decade-old remake feels more old fashioned than the three-decade-old game it's based upon. In every way, aside from resolution, it's lateral moves or steps backwards.
Visuals
Sierra was at the top of it's field in pixel art—which is still in fashion in the indie scene, thanks to nostalgia and budgetary limitations. The 3D art of the remake is not exemplar—though it looks fine from a distance for the most part. The character portraits that pop up during interrogations, however, are still images manipulated by an automated lip-syncing program that gives everyone the same weird teeth. Those, and the two new puzzles, have the aesthetic of those illustrated (now uncanny AI) hidden object games aimed at older ladies. Dis…1 found this helpful
Cool!!
New version of a masterpiece in adventure game genre. Educating storytelling and fascinating story. The player's role is more a private detective rather than a book writer (even if the main character has a book store as a home base). Succeeds and provides credibility in many ways:

Music (lots of different style tracks, which blend well into the acts and locations)
Obtaining knowledge on Voodoo cult in New Orleans (by interviewing people in the game) takes the player forward in the journey
Game structuring (daily morning paper opens a new day, passing certain story related tasks closes a day)
Journal book menu (player can recap the story while progressing, the hint system for more difficult problems)
Acting / animations of characters
Puzzles are fascinating and carefully prepared (comparable at some level to learning a new small language)
Me encanta Gabriel, tiene la mejor personalidad del mundo y es muy relajante resolver los misterios de la historia.
Hey bro! Nice horse.
