The Surge 2

why... why... why... the first 1 is not perfect, but nothing is. you had something really special with the first 1. didn't need the parry system. you had the duck and jump system, which was 100% unique. yes it was hard to tell which attacks to use it on proper sometimes, but it was amazingly satisfying when you did. you had a grounded sci-fi story. in 2, one of the first things i see is this mag lift ♥♥♥♥, just some purple air moving up that ascends you up and down an entire sky scraper.... really wtf. You highlighted a bunch of random words in the ui with bright colors... why? who is that for? must have been a daycare job for one of you, just doing things to say you did it. DEI if i had to guess. Then there is some input drop / button drop / input lag. its not constant and i could probably overlook it if it was not for everything else, but it is there nonetheless. then there's the gamma / lighting. why the hell did you change it at all, stuff is either way too dark or washed out. then there's the dialogue... what? why? why are these people talking like they are in a children's fallout game. Can't believe how much worse than the first game this is. The tech issues, the terrible changes to combat, the health and battery systeM being forced to be related. If there was something you didn't like about the firts game, you are forced into it in this one. They took one of the greatest soulslikes and turned into slop. Build variety is dead.

TLDR: Follows in the footspes of its predecessor with visual improvements and, IMO, smoother and easier gameplay, it offers a straightfoward campaign and reduces slow mediocre From Software combat, replacing it with fast paced combos, parries and finishers. It's important to note that many players have reported random but constant crashes, and the most common and easy fix is to lock the FPS at 60. I was one of those unfortunate and the fix works as of 2026. Story: After choosing your passenger on a soon to be crashed flight, awaken from a several weeks coma. Now buffed with hallucinations, the world has seemingly gone to sh!t and you seem driven to listen to that little voice in your head. You know, average monday. While the progression isn't necessarily linear, it is rather easy to miss a lot of sidequests simply due to accidently going to the right place. Gameplay: Combat is even more fluid than it the first entry. Targeting and executing a finisher on a body part will reward you with the schematic of the armor, or the weapon equipped by that mob, no random drops here. This is a good Soulslike game but a dire sequel to The Surge, and it is such an incredibly bad sequel that shares so little DNA with the first that its impossible to recommend imho. I'll talk a lot about the narrative and writing as thats my biggest gripe by far, before turning to mechanics and gameplay. First though; if you never played The Surge (I recommend it) and enjoy or tolerate generic Marvel-like millennial quirky dialogue and are looking for a soulslike, this is a decent pick for you, especially on sale. If you loved 1 or loathe the quirky millennial dialogue that has been increasingly, exhaustingly prevalent, you might want to skip this even on sale tbh. To try and summarise my thoughts on 2: It genuinely upsets me that thanks to this game existing we won't ever get a real sequel to 1 because it had something special that this game really doesn't, even though it was rough around the edges. 2 did some good things mechanically but it ruined everything non-mechanical that The Surge 1 gave to us. The first Surge game was somehow a hidden gem — unpolished and rough around the edges, but at the same time quite fun and engaging experience. I liked that game, despite its inequities, especially when we taking into consideration, that Deck13 overcome impossible and be able to crawl out from the steaming heap of garbage called Lords of the Fallen (and yes, I am going to ♥♥♥♥ on this game every time I have opportunity, because it pleases me). From the second game I expected the golden standard of sequels — trim the bad ideas, expand on good. Did developers deliver? Well, not exactly. It’s more like two steps forward, two steps back — some things are clearly more polished and refined, but at the same time, this game still cannot reach full potential and be an exceptional, genuinely memorable experience. Ok, 20+hrs in, have beaten the Delver and Little Johnny...I have no idea what is going on with the story, but this game is weirdly addicting. Starting out is a grind, a lot of dying, especially once you get past the prison 'prologue'. A lot of sticking around the neighborhood and beating the same enemies while you get used to the mechanics. There are a bunch of 'overpowered early' vids out there to take advantage of. I got this game because it was made by Focus and I see a lot that was used in WH40k Space Marine II....I should it was on sale for $2.99. I can see myself getting another 15-20 hours on it. So, if I get 40 hours of play for $3, this is a thumbs up from me. 82/100 maybe, not a perfect game, just weirdly cool and fun.
