About Better Than Dead

✦ AI summary

Better Than Dead is a brutal first-person shooter where you play a survivor with a pistol, bodycam, and kill list, fighting through photorealistic Hong Kong locations to exact revenge on those who destroyed her life. Each raid-like level rewards learning and adaptation, with die-and-retry gameplay that builds toward perfectly executed, cinema-style revenge sequences inspired by classic Hong Kong action films.

A brutal bodycam revenge FPS set in Hong Kong. Slide into bullet time, fight up close, learn each environment's rhythm, and turn every run into a faster, bloodier revenge scene.

✦ AI summary

Better Than Dead is a stylish first-person tactical shooter with satisfying combat flow and striking visual design that uses effects and atmosphere to compensate for basic textures, but players are divided on its brevity and polish. While some appreciate the fast-paced gameplay and immersive bodycam aesthetic, others find the short campaign length, inconsistent enemy AI, janky death animations, and disorienting head bobbing detract from the experience. Players seem to view it as worth trying, particularly if purchased on sale given the limited content currently available.

Better than Dead is a first-person, bodycam style shooter set in the gritty slums of Hong Kong where you revenge against a criminal gang. Storytelling is minimal, and the gameplay is similar to tactical shooter - taking covers, peaking around corners, and you have the bullet time ability. It kind of reminds me of F.E.A.R. Visually, the game looks interesting and realistic. It makes clever use of lighting, lens flares, and film grain alongside stylish environment design, even though the underlying textures aren't necessarily high-res. However, the pursuit of realism and immersion does come at some cost.

The head bobbing is violent and cannot be turned off, which is uncomfortable for some players.
There’s no UI. You can’t track your remaining ammo in the magazine, or whether bullet-time is ready or in cooldown. This makes bullet time quite unreliable to use.
The character’s arms have a natural and realistic sway, but it affects the accuracy in mid-to-long-range firefights, which frequently happen in later levels. Landing a shot sometimes feels like an RNG gamble.
There are some other rough edges as well but these are the most problematic.

Enemy A…

Very fun game. reminds me of hotline miami but first person. go fast. aim well. takes a bit of getting used to but when this game flows, it really shines. also the ragdolling is hilarious.

This game is super short but super sweet - the 2ish hours I have in it as of writing this review is every level built so far, just for reference. It's obviously still a work in progress, but for what you get right now it's well worth the price of admission, especially with the expectation that there is more to come. With its pretty intense shaders, effects, and motion blur this game makes up for what ultimately aren't insane graphics with enough visual pop that it'll make your head spin. After all, when you're dipping, ducking, diving and dodging around the worst parts of the city it's hard to get too attached to the scenery, although the overall effect is real enough that it's not too hard to feel lost in the giant concrete tenement blocks of Hong Kong between firefights. I will say, the lens distortion effect feels a tad overcooked - there's fisheye and then there's FISH EYE and this is the latter, so I turned it off in the middle of the first level and didn't look back. The gunplay is already super solid here, as well. At first, the aiming feels just a tad random and kind of like you're "steering" with the gun, but towards the later levels I found myself getting pretty John Wo…

Very fun, but... Its extremely short for the price, the enemy AI isn't the best shooting at me at times where there was NOT A SINGLE POSSIBLE WAY for them to know where I was. The time aspect is clearly there for replay ability but it is already so short I don't feel motivated to play the game even faster. I might pick up the game again in the far future, but at this moment in times its not worth the almost 13 euro's I spend on it.

I like a lot of what this game has to offer, it's brutal and satisfying and the wide angle lens and and filter gives a sense of disturbing realism. only issue is that the realism is hampered by death animations looking too similar and how some enemies fly after death, making the game look rather janky and taking out the immersion. Overall a solid game though.
