About Paradigm City

The Golden Age of heroes is over, but you're just beginning. Will you use your powers to help the world or help yourself? Set on a near-future Earth that has been irrevocably altered by the arrival of superhumans, the world has been dealing with a radical shift in the nature of humanity. For thirty years, those with world-altering powers - referred to as capes - have been at the forefront of the world's media. There has been heroes, there has been villains, and there has been world-shattering confrontations when those two groups came into contact. For a time, those individuals walked the world like modern deities. For a time, it was good.

But things change. Given time, all things resolve to entropy.

The Golden Age is over. The player, a member of the newest graduating class of an international academy for powered individuals, needs to find their place in this new world, and whether that place will be determined by their own hand - or by the machinations of others. Assigned to the troubled Paradigm City, it'll be up to the player to determine whether their name becomes a byword for fame or infamy, idealism or pragmatism, and loyalty or ambition.

Paradigm City is a 110,000 word interactive fantasy novel by James Rhoden, where your choices control the story. It's entirely text-based—without graphics or sound effects—and fueled by the vast, unstoppable power of your imagination.
  • Play as male, female or non-binary, straight, gay or bi!
  • Experience your life from youth to the end of your first big mission!
  • Multiple endings, with differences both big and small! How will your actions affect the future of the world?
  • Utilize the three precepts of epic heroism - brawn, bravado and brains - to solve challenges!
  • Increase the potency of your electrokinetic superpower to overcome dangerous threats!
  • Work with a team of elite heroes to solve a mystery - your relationships with them will determine their fates, and whether you'll learn their stories.
  • Uncover and unveil a conspiracy, or work to use it for your own ends!
  • Embrace the traditional values of the classical crusader, or embody the cutting-edge pragmatics of modern powered heroes!
  • Sixty achievements!
  • Three romance options to choose from - or don't, and keep things strictly professional!

Paradigm City is well-written. It has a compelling story, a cast of complex characters with deep and sympathetic motivations. It would make for an amazing novella, visual novel, kinetic novel, or piece of interactive fiction. Paradigm City does not, however, work well as a CYOA, ChoiceScript game. Allow me to elaborate. Fair warning, spoilers ahead. ChoiceScript games, at their best, are about player agency. When you make a choice, it affects the story, and it does so in a meaningful, long-lasting way. It can completely change the outcome of a chapter, or of the whole game. It can mean the death of one character or the survival of another. It can mean choosing one route or going down an entirely different path. Paradigm City's choices offer little to no player agency. At best, your choice results in a romance option or an additional scene (but not one where you can change what ultimately happens with the plot). At worst, your choice results in a few changed lines of dialogue that don't have any significant impact on what happens next. You will always join SOLAR. Blueshift and company will always be ambushed on their way back from the club, Ada will always be injured, but they'l…

really enjoyed this one. It gives you a good sense of Trying to be a super hero, slowly walking you through the still all to human strengths and weaknesses of the would be heroes and villians alike..., while still giving you a couple of minutes to still be totally badass and make a difference when it matters. Oh and showing you of course how even when everything goes as good as possible it can still all be for naught. So hopefully that makes you a bit curious without spoilering anything = ) Honestly probably the best super hero CYOA game ive played yet. It felt believable

This was a very solid entry into the Choice of Games library. I enjoyed the writing, everything was logical and there were minimal artefacts. Managed to play through it twice in about 12 hours (second time much faster) and while there are still significant branches left of the story left to explore I thoroughly enjoyed the ride. Worth a buy.

Clean. The story is good. Every plot end has an ending, the story know where to go. More story like this is needed. [ Embedded in this commentary that the author did a good job. I have spoken.]
