Popup Dungeon is a charming tabletop-inspired roguelike with extensive customization options and creative tools that appeals to players who enjoy D&D-style turn-based combat, though opinions split sharply on whether the core gameplay loop is engaging or tedious. Common complaints include controller support being absent, difficulty ramping steeply even on easier settings, performance issues, and pixel art that not everyone connects with, while supporters praise its unique aesthetic and deep creation kit.
Popup Dungeon is a 1-player D&D campaign. Played a little and put it down in 1.2 hours using a mouse. Difficulty can be set in game. You play as an assortment of cardboard cutout characters, taking turns going through simple maps beating up baddies in a classic 'tabletop' dungeon-crawling, rpg adventure. It's got everything D&D players might like: rolling for initiative, checking out unknown dungeon rooms, a wizard, a doom voice egging you on. Except unlike other campaigns, this one is without friends and you're expected to die repeatedly (the 'rogue-lite' aspect of it), to get better to try again. The game's got charm and tons of customizable things. The enemy art is pretty cool, and - while annoying squeaky - I liked the tutorial bat. I played the tutorial, then a bit of a tower romp with Blade, a corgi, and a cat. There were wins to be had. Guess the main downside I saw was how long each floor is. Next to that is the cardboard cutouts. I get it's quirky and niche nostalgia, but why do the enemies have really good art on bases while the characters look like folded together printouts meshed with UPS packages? Didn't encounter any major bugs, but at the same t…1 found this helpful
a bit skeptical because of some of the negativity early on but since this game has been out so long ive found no issues and the gameplay is fun, if a bit difficult at first, learning curve and all. I'm surprised more people that like this type of game havent jumped on and played more especially with the customization options so diverse with the creation kit built into the game. Reminds me of Wildermyth but with a more TTRPG style.
zero controller support do not buy if you are on steam deck or couch play. remapping is awful and the devs could easily fix
Popup Dungeon is an unusual and refreshingly ambitious title that refuses to fit neatly into a single genre. Developed by Triple.B.Titles and published by Balor Games, it blends tactical combat, roguelike progression, tabletop influences, and extensive user-generated content into one expansive experience. From the moment players enter its world, the game establishes itself as a tribute to imagination, offering a colorful papercraft presentation that makes every encounter feel as though it has sprung from the pages of a fantasy storybook. While many RPGs focus solely on delivering a scripted adventure, Popup Dungeon instead hands players the keys to an entire creative toolbox. The game's central premise revolves around climbing the mysterious Wizard's Tower, a place filled with bizarre scenarios and an ever-changing assortment of enemies. Narrated with personality and humor, the campaign carries a lighthearted tone that complements the game's visual style. What initially appears to be a straightforward dungeon crawler quickly evolves into something much larger, introducing science fiction settings, horror-inspired missions, and countless unexpected twists. The sheer variety of envi…
Unfortunately, for a game that seems to have a lot going for it, once you get into it, it quickly falls apart. I found the game to be extremely boring and bland. I played through several levels with all kinds of different parties, and just did not have a good time with it. The concept is really neat, the art style is pretty cool, the sound design and music tracks are alright. The UI could use some work, but it isn't the worst I have seen. Theoretically this game should be doing pretty well in my books, but I just found it to be seriously tedious and boring. Add onto the fact the game does not run well at all. This isn't a game from the 90s that you should have to wrestle with to get it working properly, or even from the 2000s. It barely reached even a few years old before it started just, not working properly. Even if you think I am wrong, and that the game does look like a lot of fun to play, and you are interested in it, do you really want to roll the dice (haha funny) and see if the game works or not? From what I can tell the game has been fully abandoned, and it is not popular enough to even have a dedicated fanbase who want to fix it. Do not waste your money buying this, a…
getting too hard too soon on easy difficulty humour is cute but i'm not quite tuning in don't like pixel graphics
