The game most people say is the worst thing Square has ever done, it's really not that bad. The game is mostly menu-based and really the only active gameplay is during battle. Outside of it, the gameplay loop consists mostly of doing various jobs to get money, train stats and learn new skills, and use the money you earn to level up yer party members, improve their gear and go on outings with 'em to improve yer mood and restore yer stamina, since you'll be less effective at jobs if you don't Once you have the recommended levels and gear, you can pick yer party and leave on a proper expedition, where you have to manage food and items long enough to make it to the goal. It's a fun semi-idle party management simulator to play while listening to a podcast or watching a stream or video, similar to Fantasy Life and the like, and really the only reason its reputation is so bad is because it used to be bundled with Octopath Traveler. Perfectly playable, and downright gorgeous, on an OLED Steam Deck, and pretty much where the game shines. It's a cozy, no pressure combination of virtual novel, walking/exploration sim, turn-based RPG. As such the novel concept can seem confusing. They pack a lot of gameplay into it. Character development is uniquely handled as well, whereas the town-life side jobs are used to enhance the various stats such as Strength, Dexterity, Wisdom, ect. as well as money to buy equipment which you then take on out-of-town expeditions, walking sim style, to reveal the world around your isolated settlement. Are there better, more focused visual novels, turn-based RPG's, daily life sims out there. Most assuredly, and if you mainly want a game to play long sessions on the PC then this may seem rather expensive and tame. Where this game truly shines, and is perfectly made for, are owners of Steam-linked hand-helds, such as the Steam Deck. I've had this "game" on my wishlist for a while and finally decided to buy it since it was on sale; [b]big[/b] mistake on my part. And before anyone gives me a hard time for refunding at less than an hour, I both [i]applaud[/i] and [i]question the sanity[/i] of anyone that played this "game" longer than that; you either have impressive willpower to marshal through the experience, or are flat-out mentally unstable - I just can't see an in-between in this case. To me, it is - as I've seen other people say - absolutely [i]the worst game[/i] in Square Enix's entire catalogue. And honestly, to actually call it a "game" is an insult to the memory of even nigh-ancient throwbacks like Pong and its contemporaries - at least those games were [i]fun[/i], as simple as they were. Definitely a mobile game. Primarily a side hustle simulator (don't actually participate in the side hustles) with jrpg elements. Can be zen, but not worth the full price so buy on sale.

my verdict for this game is that... it's fine. you'll see everything the game can do in like, 2 hours, because it's almost exclusively a game where you go through menus to do stuff. it's not even close to being the worst thing i've ever laid my eyes on or played with my own hands, and for like 10-12 bucks on sale you can get an alright game to menu through, but also you could just pick up another jrpg to sink your teeth into and play that instead. for what it's worth, i do think the characters are fun and they're definitely the highlight of the game. though at the same time you aren't dealing with more than "fun". this isn't a masterpiece on that front. it's just that. and if characters being merely "fun" as the highlight turns you off because of the realization that the game does not have much else going on then you are better looking elsewhere for a game. as it stands i guess this is mostly a positive review because... well, as i said, it's truly not that terrible. good? hard to make a case for it, but there's tons of true bottom-of-the-barrel games out there and this isn't one of them, while also being a game i would comfortably place bottom 3 of my list of games to recommend …

Not really "Fun", kinda meh at best. As I played it I realized that There are several hundred other games I'd rather play than grind through this mediocre game.... (and those are just of the ones I own). Suppose I were trapped in a limitless Void with only my steam library to play, I might eventually get around to it...
