Moonscars

Overview I just finished (or rather, was forced to stop) playing Moonscars. At its core, the game is an absolute blast—a stylish, aggressive 2D action-platformer with satisfying combat and a dark, atmospheric world. I made it through roughly 70% of the content and thoroughly enjoyed what I played. Unfortunately, a well-known game-breaking glitch abruptly ended my run. Despite developer responses and multiple suggested workarounds online, none of them worked for me. Players also note that the related ability is notoriously difficult to trigger reliably, and after trying every method, I had no success either. This remains a major oversight years after release. That said, I still want to give a fair overview of the game so potential players can decide whether the risk is worth it—especially if they happen to avoid the glitch. The controls are clunky and unreliable on controller. I would have tried with KBM, but quickly got overwhelmed looking at the layout. While you can rebind the KBM controls - the default layout is clearly for the most depraved of masochists, and you can look forward to remapping everything but WASD. Its pretty clear they are going with a combat-heavy platformer hack & slash with multiple complex (and imo overengineered) systems for upgrades, weapons, skills, and one that seems a tad roguelike. The dark and edgy pixel art is quite nice, and the music fits the atmosphere. But the story is convoluted from the 1st opening cutscene and I honestly didn't care about it within 20 minutes. The characters are weird... especially this horse-sized talking cat that seems so incredibly out of place and doesn't match the vibe at all. Unfortunately, this game just isn't what I expected. The art style is genuinely amazing, and that's what made me buy it, but everything else falls flat. The narrative was confusing from the very start, and after a while I just started skipping it entirely. The combat also didn't click with me. It's difficult in a way that doesn't feel rewarding: you die in two or three hits from basic mobs, and I never felt like I was actually getting better at it. Enemies are everywhere, and since they all respawn every time you die, you end up fighting the exact same ones again and again. That got boring fast. Eventually I was just running past them to make progress, since clearing an area without dying two or three times is a challenge in itself. The game essentially trains you to skip its own combat. When you run into three or four enemies at once, it turns into frantic dashing, hoping for a window to land a single hit. That gets tedious quickly. So it's a no from me. The art style sold me, but after four hours I decided to drop it. It just wasn't fun.
